Q&A: When Should I Begin Talking with My Wedding Florist?

More than one bride has told me that planning her wedding flowers was one of the most enjoyable parts of such a busy process, so I think you should find a florist as soon as possible, of course! However, I do recommend you take the time to select a designer who’s right for you.

There are so many talented designers to choose from and you want to find someone who understands your vision and has a style that aligns with your preferences. You want to find someone you get along with, so you can speak freely, ask questions, and share your ideas.

As a floral designer, I believe we are providing you with a service that often starts long before you see the final bouquets, installations and arrangements. Planning your floral design is a chance for you to imagine the look and feel of the event, and discover your own personal style.

Many venues bring their own character and feel, while others give you a blank slate. We should consider how your flowers will work best with the venue, your gown, the bridesmaids' dresses, and even table linens... and all the other elements to create the right mood for each part of the day.

You may already know flowers, or you may be looking for advice. You have probably been looking at weddings online or in magazines, and perhaps you've started your Pinterest board. As your florist, I'd want to see and hear it all so that I can bring your vision to life.

It's also helpful to get a sense of budget early to make sure you can plan where you want to make the most impact to fit your vision and style. We understand that things may still be evolving and will work with you to adapt to any changes along the way. And with the popularity of weddings in the Hudson Valley at their peak between August and October, it's a good idea to secure a date with your florist, just as you do all other vendors.
