Athabold Flowers is expanding its floral design business with the opening of a new design studio and retail location in the Hudson Valley. Located at 214 Main Street in Germantown, NY, doors are set to open in early May, just in time for Mother’s Day and the start of the summer season.

The prime location will provide the owners with a work space to welcome their wedding clients, while offering floral arrangements to a broader audience for any event and “everyday” occasions. Centered in the heart of the town’s historical business district, the studio will also feature a select line of products and art designed by Athabold’s founder and creative director, Shuheng Ji.

Established in 2016, Athabold Flowers evolved out of a shared desire to do something more creative that allowed the wife and husband owners to apply their passion and experience in design and customer service to work more closely with the people they serve on a daily basis.

“I find such joy in seeing my client’s expressions when we deliver a bouquet or set up for a wedding,” says Shuheng. “I love the idea of working with a broader audience, giving me the opportunity to share these moments with more people each and every day, providing a bouquet for a dinner party or a romantic gift, or creating custom arrangements to bring something fresh and beautiful into their homes.”

Athabold will sell a daily selection of fresh bouquets and custom arrangements, as well as the owner’s floral artwork and an expanding line of products. Items for sale will include greeting cards, wrapping paper, and other items with designs by Shuheng (also available online).

Athabold is also the name the owners gave to their property just outside of town, where they have been planting wild flowers with plans to grow additional blooms this year. “Working from my home, I’m so inspired by the surroundings,” Shuheng says. “We have our meadow out my window, and beyond that I see rolling farm fields, wooded areas, and mountain views. I’m so glad to find a new studio space that is so close.”

The owners are proud of the area they now call home—and all stationary products feature the “Designed in Germantown, NY” tagline. “When we moved to the area a few years ago, we immediately fell in love with Germantown,” says co-owner Dan Djuplin. “We were looking at other places in the area for a while, but when we saw this town and the property we bought, it just felt right.”

The word Athabold traveled to the states with one of the owner's Icelandic ancestors, who hung it above his door as a sign of warmth and hospitality. It means “everyone welcome,” and the owners say it was an idea that fit, as they felt so welcome in the area, and now hope to welcome others to visit, collaborate, and find something that shares one of those moments of delight that only flowers can provide.
