A Visit to The Flower Fields in Southern California
Nearly 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers are blooming in Carlsbad, California. Spread across a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a visit to The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is one of San Diego County’s most beloved spring traditions from early March through early May, and a popular destination for weddings.
Ranunculus is one of my favorite flowers to use in cut flower arrangements—especially bridal bouquets—so I paid a visit during my recent trip to the region. I love the look of a whole flower field, and as the final snows of the season were falling in the Hudson Valley, this was a welcome and memorable view.
Mid March is only the beginning of the six to eight week blooming season, so I got to see the fields at various stages—from small plants to full blooms. We witnessed the harvesters at work and I saw how they race against time to pick the right flowers as buds, just before they bloom. They bunch and wrap them right in the field, preparing them for market on the spot.
Ranunculus is versatile and works in just about any cut flower arrangement. Their soft color, layered petals, and curly stems create the most elegant and natural bouquets. And they are easily paired with other flowers and greeneries.
